AXE VALLEY AXMINSTER Axminster is a small friendly market town with the amenities you would expect from a larger town. It boasts many family run businesses and specialists shops including the famous Axminster carpets, Axminster power tools and Hugh’s famous River Cottage shop and canteen and Headquarters just up the road from our B&B. There are two supermarkets on the edge of town and a bustling market in the town square on Thursday’s selling local produce and crafts. There are a wide variety of venues for eating out with welcoming cafes, restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes. LYME REGIS Lyme Regis is steeped in history and full of charm, surrounded by unspoilt countryside and beautiful clean beaches, it has a unique captivating vibrant atmosphere. CHARMOUTH Charmouth lies on the jurassic coast and is acknowledged as having one of the finest fossil beaches in Europe. Charmouth Heritage coast centre on the sea front runs events all year round including fossil hunting expeditions, rock pool rambles, plankton trawls and fossil hunting weekends. Charmouth village has a relaxed pace of life with shops, cafes, restuarants and pubs. BEER Nestling in a sunny valley, its soaring white cliffs forming both a sheltered cove for its fishing fleet and a sun trap for visitors. Here you can hire boats and deckchairs, swim in the clear sea or just relax taking in the view. Beer has been famous since Roman times for its stone, used in well known buildings such as Windsor Castle, the Tower of London and Exeter Cathedral. Beer is also famous for its lace making which supplied the trimmings for Queen Victoria’s wedding dress. A popular attraction nearby is Pecorama, based around fine miniature and model railways, with children’s playground and delightful gardens. There are also regular angling trips throughout the season while in August you can join in the regatta week including the famous barrel rolling. BRANSCOMBE Legend has it that this ancient and delightful village derives its name from its position of two branching combes or valleys from the west. Branscombe features a 12th century church a thatched smithy dating from Norman times and The Old Bakery tea room. There is a car park at Branscombe Mouth where keen walkers can enjoy a cliff walk with fine panoramic views. |
